Full course description
Promotion and tenure remain two of the most sought after goals among physicians and scientists in academic medicine. However, given the focus of academic institutions on achieving the "tripartite mission" of clinical care, scholarship and education and the increasing number of specialty tracks, navigating the process of promotion can be a daunting task for the junior faculty member. Despite formal education and access to online written guidelines, junior faculty are often left with questions such as:
"What are the expectations for promotion on my track?"
"When should I think about promotion and who can tell me if I am ready?"
"Am I on the right track?"
In this module, we present an overview of promotion and tenure including their significance, a review of the various tracks, the importance of the mentor/mentee relationship as well as providing keys to the successful planning of promotion and tenure.
Participants who complete this module will be able to:
- List the reasons promotion and tenure are so valued in academic medical centers.
- Understand the historical importance of tenure.
- Understand the importance of creating a personal timeline for promotion and tenure.
- Identify key expectations of mentors and mentees in achieving promotion.
- Understand the portfolio and what is needed at every stage.
